Fourth Grade News: Edition #1 (8/31/20120)

Week One Is In The Books!!

We can't begin to tell you how proud we are of our students.  They really embraced online learning from home with open arms and dove right into our morning meetings and our Google Classroom assignments. In Math, we learned about our math teachers, in writing they learned about different kind of sentences, and in reading they learned about "Grappling" with assignments.

Grappling

We will be speaking in all of our classes about this concept of "Grappling" with school assignments and
exercises.  We are promoting the idea that the best learning comes when kids wrestle with new ideas, concepts, and skills.  What does that mean for your student?  It means, sometimes, they will be frustrated with the lessons that we create.  That frustration is OK. We want students to learn from mistakes, we want them to be comfortable with feeling uncomfortable in their learning. We will continue to speak about this all year.

Turning In Blank Work

One of the first things students learn about online learning is that their grades will be more about the effort they put into the lessons rather than just getting the "right" answers all the time.  During morning I showed students how I grade their work in Google Classroom. I showed them a few examples of work that was turned that was "blank", with nothing completed.  We will certainly let parents know, if this happens over and over again with any student. I just wanted to let you know as parents, just because a student has marked an assignment as "done" it doesn't mean they actually did the work. (We returned the assignment and allowed students to resubmit their work.)

What Are We Learning This Week?

In reading, Mr. Grove has prepared an amazing set of lessons about the characteristics of Poetry.  In Writing Ms. Yani will be expertly teaching how to write a paragraph. In Math, Mr. V and Ms. Kreill put together lessons about place value and multiples of 10.  All the lessons this week will certainly longer and challenging. So it is important to keep our kids encouraged.  They can do it! They are so smart.

In Math there will be three assignments everyday:

1) Problem of the Day
2) Fluency Practice
3) Main Lesson.

Ms. Kreil put together a video that will will be posted in Google Classroom that will tell us what the day in the life of a fourth grade student in math will look like.  (Thanks Ms. Kreil!)  The link is also listed below.

Morning Meeting

In Morning Meetings, we learned breathing techniques and the Little Rock Nine.  These week we will be talking about the Black Lives Matter movement.  Our proverb next week is "If we do small things every day, they can make a big difference."   Last week our proverb was "All things are difficult before they are easy."  The breathing techniques are super important, as they will help kids deal with the stress of learning at home, and being separated from their friends.  It certainly has helped me personally as I wrestled with tech issues while preparing the week's lessons.

Resources

As I find different resources for parents, I will share them here:

Dayton Metro LibraryOur city's amazing library is providing students and parents a ton of resources for online learning:

Tech Help:  We have to options for you if you are having problems with your technology:

  • A Live HELP DESK can be accessed by families by calling 937-985-DECA (3322) to get additional assistance with tech support.
  • Families can also always email help@daytonearlycollege.org and a DECA staff member will get back to you within one business day.
Census Help:  We still have a third of Montgomery County residents who haven't participated in the census counting. The census is an important part to make sure that we are represented in government appropriately.  The RTA is helping citizens participate in the count:  https://www.wdtn.com/news/local-news/dayton-rta-us-census-partner-up-to-help-riders-complete-2020-survey/

Voting: Without telling people who to vote for, we want to promote the importance of voting. In the news there is so much confusing information about voting during the pandemic, this article shows that Montgomery county has made voting safe, easy, and accessible for all:  https://www.daytondailynews.com/news/how-do-you-vote-in-ohio-heres-everything-you-need-to-know/VX4ZFEF5NVFVZO2VCQJJ7IT3VQ/.

Deca Prep Fourth Grade Newsletter - May 18-24 - Issue Number 6

We Area Almost There!!

When I think of that saying, this song from The Princess and The Frog pops into my  mind.  This might be a tough week for our kids, but we can't let them give up.  Because are so close to the end, they might feel like letting up a little bit, but we have a two projects to complete this week: one for math and one for ELA.  Both are about the rainforest.

Next Week

There will be no new assignments next week.  It is a time for kids (and teachers) to get caught up on all of the work that was missed.  Remember, in order to receive a "complete" on the report card you need to have 60% or more of your work completed.

Fourth Grade Recognition Info

If you didn't catch the Fourth Grade Recognition Information in your class Dojos, here it is now:

The Last Week of School

We will have updated office hours for you next week.  (We will send those out on Friday.) We will be having an all fourth grade morning meeting every day at 9:30 AM.  Again, there will be no new assignments that last week of school.

Newsletter: May 4-8th - Issue Number 5

Today is May 4th, which some of you probably know is Star Wars day.  It also starts the fifth week of online learning.  It is hard to believe that it has been five weeks already!  Right?

Everyone should have received a progress report on Friday.  It was designed to let you know if your student is on track to either have a "Complete" or "Incomplete" at the end of the quarter.  (We are not giving out letter grades.)

In ELA this week we are working on writing.  Starting with how to write an introductory paragraph, and ending with writing a five paragraph essay.  In Math this week we are working on place value.  We will continue to have read aloud at 11:00 AM every morning.

Teacher Appreciate Week!

At the risk of sounding like we are tooting our own horn, it is Teacher Appreciation Week.  We can't tell you how much we appreciate our colleagues.  The amount of work and dedication DECA Prep teachers put in ever week is beyond comprehension sometimes.    So if you have a moment, please reach out to a teacher and say thank you.  I know he or she will appreciate it.  :-)

Fourth Grade Recognition

Every year DECA Prep has held a recognition ceremony to say goodbye to our fourth graders as the head out to become middle school students.  Of course this year, we can't gather together and recognize our fourth graders in person. So....we are planning a virtual ceremony.  It will be pre-recorded and available on the last day of school, when the original ceremony was planned to be held.

To make this video special, we need your help.  By May 8th, send a baby picture and a current picture along with a few phrases of encouragement no longer than two sentences to your homeroom teacher.    We will be sending out a separate message with more details.

Newsletter: 4/27-5/1 - Issue #4

We are starting week four for this thing called eLearning.  The fourth grade teaching team can't begin to tell you how proud we are of our learners.  So many are working diligently to complete all their assignments everyday.  Some kids are actually doing better in the online world than they are in regular classrooms.

Here are probably some reasons why based on our observations:
  • There is a lot less drama to worry about
  • Fewer distractions at home
  • Without any physical papers its easier to stay organized

While this might be easier for some, we know that for a lot of our students this is very hard.

Here are some of the reasons why this is difficult for some students based on our observations:

  • Parents are essential works either in the health care field or some other field and have to work difficult shifts or extended hours
  • Internet connections are slow or don't exist, making it hard to complete work
  • Without a teacher in front of you it is hard to be organized and motivated
Regardless of how you are all feeling, know that we are all in this together.  Each of us is able to deal with all this in different ways, and your teachers and principals are here to help in any way possible.

Please remember each teacher has office hours.  This is a great time to get help and motivation.

Introducing Mr. Mitchell

We wanted to take a moment and introduce one of our fourth grade staff team members.  Mr. Mitchell is an educational aid who engages students in one-on-one/ small group support, assists teachers with everyday tasks, and carries out parent outreach regularly. Mr. Mitchell has been in education for 2 years with this being his first year with DECA.  Those of you who have spoken with him, now can put a face with a name!

Submitting Work That Is NOT Complete

A parental advisory warning:  A few of ours students are hitting "complete" on their google assignment when in actuality they didn't do anything.  We are reaching out to parents of which this pertains, however, a quick conversation with your at home student could help them know you are aware.

Family Resources

If for some reason you are out of internet access in your home, or if you are out of minutes or data on your phone, the Montgomery County Job Center is offering free wireless internet access in its parking lot. https://thejobcenter.org/covid-19-resources.html

The Goodwill/Easterseals of the Miami Valley is offering computer use for those looking for unemployment or you need to fill out job applications.  https://gesmv.org/

The Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati  is doing some virtual family events.  You can read about it here in the Cincinnati Parent Magazine on line:   https://cincinnatiparent.com/guide-to-free-virtual-family-programming-at-the-taft-museum/

For those of you with younger ones at home, maybe a fourth grade sibling can help setup a Youtube read aloud with Brightly Storytime:

Newsletter: April 20-24 - Issue 3 2020

Time Goes By Fast

Can you believe we finished two weeks of online school?  Congratulations to all the students who have 100% of all their work turned in.  We are so proud of you (and thankful to your parents) for making this happen.

We have learned a lot about this eLearning thing.  We are still working out kinks with Google Hangouts, finding better ways to deliver lessons, and figuring out how to make morning meetings fun and engaging.

Speaking of morning meetings...

Morning Meetings

Morning meeting is a great opportunity for your children to connect with classmates and teachers alike.  It is the perfect way to start the day.  Teachers go over the "to-do" list for the day, answer questions, sometimes play a game or two, and generally build relationships with students virtually.  We love to see our morning meetings filled with every student in the fourth grade.  You can find log-on info your student's google classroom.  Most kids come dressed as they are, in PJs, robes, t-shirts etc.  It is a low key event, and easy to attend!!

Fourth Grade Spirit Week Is Here!!!!

All of fourth grade are having a spirit week where students dress according to the plan below.  We are practicing for the school-wide spirit week coming soon.

Fourth Grade Reading Challenge

We posted info about the Fourth Grade Reading Challenge in your dojos.  If you missed it, here is the link:  Fourth Grade Reading Challenge.

Fun From This Week!

We had our first Chess Club on Friday!!!  We didn't have a lot of kids, but those who joined had a great time.  Every Friday at 1:00 PM!!!!  Look in the Brain Break google classroom for the info on how to join!

We had some fun with Simon Says during Morning Meeting!

Don't forget to come for office hours to get help

What:  The fourth grade reading challenge is a race to see who can read as many minutes as they can.

Why:  To encourage our students to read at home during the pandemic.

How:  Each student is to read as many minutes from any book as possible.  At the end of each week a parent will send a Dojo message to the homeroom teacher with the amount of minutes read that week.  At the end of a two week span, the top three students with the most minutes will win a book.

When:  We will start next week on Monday, April 20, 2020.

Who:  All DECA Prep fourth grade students!

Grambling State - Fourth Grade News

We Appreciate You Parents!!!

We couldn't do this thing without you.  You are what makes all of this work.  Making sure kids are awake, going to sleep at a decent time, helping them with their assignments after a long day of work, and just being patient with your teachers has made this all worthwhile for us!!!  Thank you!

Do You Need Help?

Is your Chromebook not working?  Do you need help with food assistance?  Do you need help getting internet at home? For any type of question, DECA has set up a help e-mail address for you to send questions no matter the issue.  help@daytonearlycollege.org.  Please don't be afraid to reach out!

Moving Away From Zoom and to Google Hangouts

Our district leaders have asked us to stop using Zoom as a way of delivering our online lessons.  We are going to start using google hangouts instead.  We will post NEW links to Class Dojos for morning meetings etc.  We are making this move because Google Hangouts is more secure than Zoom.

Going Live For Read-Aloud

We are going to try something new this week.  Mr. V will be reading a book out loud at 11:00 AM everyday live.  We will record the session so that if you can't make it, you will be able to watch later.  We will be reading from a book from MyOn:  Museum Mysteries - The Case of the Missing Mom.  We are doing this to increase the interactiveness of lessons.  There is a companion vocabulary journal that is due on Friday that goes along with this book.
